Paving the way – thanks to the National Lottery
Improvements have taken place at our Hague Bar site, thanks to funding from the National Lottery Awards for All scheme.

A group of dedicated plot holders, working tirelessly over three very hot weekends earlier in June 2018, improved pedestrian access down the central path and other communal areas, all of which used to become very muddy and dangerous in wet weather. New drainage has been put in place and the paths have been resurfaced using Netpave (a recycled plastic grid) and limestone chippings.

Amanda Evans, the project’s coordinator, said, “We were thrilled to receive £1732 in funding from the National Lottery Awards for All scheme, and this, along with the willingness of plot holders to give their time and share skills and expertise, has culminated in the project being a great success. The improved paths will benefit all plot holders and visitors, making the site safer and more accessible, especially during wet weather, as well as being easier to maintain. This was a very ambitious project, but there was a great feeling of camaraderie throughout, despite the heat and the labour-intensive work.  See photos of the work on our gallery page.

Would you like to take on an allotment ?
We do have allotments available to rent from time to time.  The benefits of allotment gardening include growing and eating fresh produce, healthy exercise, stimulating activity for body and mind and spending time sharing an interest with like-minded people.  For more information about our society, including the annual membership fee and plot rental, see our About us page.
If you are interested in taking on an allotment please contact the waiting list secretary to put your name down on our waiting list (see our Contact page).

The Ollersett Avenue site Open Day 2016 was held on Saturday, 9th July 2016
Again this year the Open Day coincided with New Mills High School ‘Gardens open for charity’ which was part of the National Gardens Scheme.

Plotholders were on hand to talk about their plots and what they were growing this year.

Restoration of the Hague Bar site
The work carried out by Murphy on behalf of Network Rail was completed during November 2015. The footpath boundary was reinstated by Murphy with rabbit proof fencing, leaving the Society to complete the perimeter of plots 1-7. The weather was not kind but after a short delay, this was completed in February 2016, and each plot now has a rabbit proof gate as well. With materials donated by Murphy from the deconstruction of their compound, the manure and woodchip bays inside the gate were replaced and the edge of the plots 1 and 2 shored up. A wider reversing area for deliveries was also created. Plotholders are now busy developing their plots and for some, starting with a blank canvas is giving them the opportunity to creatively re-design their allotments.

Visit by St George’s Primary School
All children from St George’s Primary made a visit to Ollersett Allotments on Thursday 21st May 2015. Infants visited in 2 groups in the morning and Juniors in 2 groups in the afternoon.  Click here for some pictures from the Infants’ visit.  As well as looking around at the different allotment plots some of the plotholders talked to the pupils about tools that we use, different crops that we grow and how we manage the site.  Many thanks to Jen Dale and Chris Moore who made star appearances displaying their lovely (and very productive) plots.
