Hague Bar site development update
Veg and fruit are sprouting well, allotment holders have even had their first crops, and at last, WE HAVE WATER!. Thanks to the hard work of some of the men gardeners the 1000ltr water containers are now full so plants can at last have a good drink. But the drought conditions have taken their toll with the more inexperienced of us coming close to losing plants through lack of water. Until now every pint has had to be carried onto the site from home and 50 litres a time has not been enough to give every plant the water it needed.
Some of us have now even got our sheds up, led by John whose brilliant idea of extended roofing to increase rain run off is proving advantageous. Not only is the rain being collected to top up the water butt, but there is shade for those moments for sitting supping tea and contemplating the next task….
For those of us new to allotments, it’s fascinating to see the very different ways of tackling the plots. Some have a very professional approach, some are just annoyingly good seasoned gardeners and grow everything well! And then there are the beginners who are not doing too badly for a first attempt and can hardly wait to dig up that first potato , pluck the first beans and taste the first courgette.
